Rewarding Consensus Proofs

At its core, the incentive mechanism compensates relayers for keeping Hyperbridge's view of external chains up-to-date. This service is fundamental; without fresh consensus proofs, cross-chain messages cannot be securely verified and delivered. Relayers are rewarded in Hyperbridge's native currency, $BRIDGE, for successfully performing this critical function.

The Reward Mechanism: A Detailed Breakdown

The process for earning rewards is deterministic and transparent, triggered by specific on-chain events within the Hyperbridge runtime.

  1. The Triggering Action: A consensus relayer monitors a connected external chain (e.g., an Ethereum L2). When that chain finalizes a new block or set of blocks, the relayer constructs a valid consensus proof and submits it as a transaction to Hyperbridge.
  2. State Verification and Update: The Hyperbridge runtime receives this proof and verifies its validity. If the proof is authentic and advances the consensus state of the source chain (i.e., it represents a newer block height), Hyperbridge accepts it.
  3. The StateMachineUpdated Event: Upon successful verification and state update, the Hyperbridge runtime emits a StateMachineUpdated event. This on-chain event serves as the definitive, auditable record that a specific state machine has been successfully advanced by the relayer's transaction.
  4. Automated Reward Issuance: The issuance of the reward is directly tied to this event. The Hyperbridge protocol disburses(from the treasury) a predetermined amount of $BRIDGE tokens to the wallet address of the relayer who submitted the successful proof.

A Competitive, Permissionless Environment

The incentive structure fosters a healthy, competitive market. Typically, only the first relayer to successfully submit the proof for a new state update receives the full reward for that specific update. This encourages relayers to optimize their operations for low latency and efficiency, ensuring that Hyperbridge is updated with external state changes as quickly as possible. This model is inherently permissionless—no staking or whitelisting is required to participate. Any operator can run a consensus relayer and begin competing to submit proofs and earn rewards, creating a truly decentralized foundation for the network.

Distinction from Message Relaying Fees

It is crucial to distinguish these automated consensus rewards from the fees associated with relaying individual messages.
